PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT: Community Services – Support Groups

One of the most utilized programs at Harbor House is our Community Services—a free and confidential resource for survivors throughout Orange County. This program offers a wide range of support, including safety planning, advocacy, counseling, and more. A unique aspect of Community Services is our Support Groups, which are specially designed for survivors and those in their lives affected by abuse. Our dedicated Case Managers plan and host these groups using trauma-informed approaches tailored to the specific trends and needs of our survivors.

Recently, our Back-To-School Support Group was a heartwarming success! We were thrilled to welcome 15 survivors, 20 children, and one dedicated volunteer. While the kids enjoyed a fun-filled play area and shopped for school supplies, the adults engaged in an empowering group chat about “Back To School Boundaries.” We shared safety tips for the upcoming school year and offered advice to a soon-to-be teen mom. Survivors and their children also had the chance to shop for basic needs, clothing, and even participate in raffles for new items.

Support groups are essential for survivors of abuse as they offer a safe and supportive community where individuals can connect with others who share similar experiences. These groups provide validation, reducing feelings of isolation and empowering survivors to recognize their strength. Facilitated by trauma-informed professionals, support groups also offer valuable education on topics like setting boundaries and understanding trauma, equipping survivors with tools for healing. Additionally, they provide a space for expression without judgment, fostering growth and hope. For those with children, these groups can also play a critical role in breaking the cycle of abuse and creating healthier environments for future generations.

Thanks to our dedicated advocates and the outpouring of generous donations from our community members, we are able to host these imperative Support Groups, offering survivors hope and healing.
