The Holidays at Harbor House – Sam’s Story
The holiday season is particularly difficult for survivors of domestic violence. The stress and financial strain of the holidays can exacerbate abusive behavior, and for many survivors, it can be a time when they feel particularly isolated and alone. That is why domestic violence shelters, like Harbor House provide a vital lifeline for survivors, children, and pets during this time, offering support and resources to help them stay safe while celebrating the holidays.
This time of year is meant to be filled with love, laughter, and joy, but for *Sam, it was a time of fear and dread. She had spent years in an abusive relationship and experienced unimaginable types of violence that left her feeling drained and hopeless. Despite all of this, Sam worked hard to save up money and buy her children items from their holiday wish list. But her hopes were shattered when her partner destroyed all of the gifts in a fit of rage.
Thankfully, Sam found hope in Harbor House, where we were able to provide her with gift cards to replenish the gifts that were destroyed. With our help, Sam was able to provide her children with a memorable holiday where they received their joyous gifts, and Sam was able to experience the joy of shopping and purchasing the presents herself, an autonomous gift.
At Harbor House, we believe that everyone deserves to experience the joy of the holiday season, free from fear and abuse. We’re proud to have been able to help Sam and her family create a joyous Christmas, and we’ll continue to work tirelessly to help those in need find hope and happiness during the holiday season and beyond.
Year-round we strive to provide survivors with a sense of independence and financial autonomy. One way we do this is through the generous donation of gift cards from retailers like Wal Mart, Target, Publix, Visa, and MasterCard. These gift cards allow survivors to shop independently and free from financial abuse, an experience they are often restricted from in domestic violence situations.
